This Blog is Against Cyber Censorship

Today (March 12), “Reporters Without Borders” are celebrating the World Day Against Cyber Censorship.

Maybe we cannot relate with the subject in Lebanon since this virtual side of this messed up country is still free (so far) but it doesn’t mean we’re off the hook. If they’re not doing anything about what’s being said in our blogesphere, it doesn’t mean they don’t want to, they just don’t know how…yet!

I mean we’ve seen some of their “intentions” when they tried to shut down the TV show “LOL” because of  some “inappropriate” jokes!

To see what we might be facing in the future, nothing is more clear and frightening than the list of the bloggers at Threatned Voices who have been threatened, arrested or killed because of their words online!

What anti-censorship means to me? Freedom! Our most basic right as human beings! We need to be free to express our feelings, thoughts and opinions with no fear of anyone! Censorship by other parties usually ends up with self-censorship, you’ll end up imprisoning yourself if they don’t do it themselves! Which is more dangerous to me..

How companies and governments should act in regard to this censorship? Not by only allowing others to talk freely online, but by making sure they have the means to do so. In Lebanon, they can start by offering a decent internet and telecommunications infrastructure..

New RTL-This Tutorial

So I managed to write a simple tutorial that consists of three parts about how to RTL a simple webpage:

  1. RTLing a Hello World WebPage: http://rtl-this.com/tutorial/rtling-hello-world-webpage
  2. Getting to Know the HTML/CSS: http://rtl-this.com/tutorial/rtling-hello-world-webpage-getting-know-htmlcss
  3. RTLing: http://rtl-this.com/tutorial/rtling-hello-world-webpage-rtling

I hope it’s useful to someone :)

I received links and feedback from several readers about the RTL of the Web. I didn’t expect to get that help :) that was very kind, sweet and simply amazing. Thank you so much I’ll publish them all soon.

One more thing: if you’re a web designer and have the time and will to design a (free) blog template so it can be flipped in a tutorial and be available to be downloaded let me know so we can work work on something together.

RTL This

It has always bothered me the very limited collection of RTL(right-to-left) blog templates/themes..whether it’s for Blogger, Wordpress or Drupal or any other Blogging platform or CMS. Web Designers and Developers might not find a problem since they can flip it themselves in couple of hours depending on the design itself.

The other part of Arab Bloggers (the majority) do not have the enough skills to do such tasks. So we end up with:

  1. A very limited number of RTL themes that we see everywhere (especially Blogger)
  2. And the many many LTR (left-to-right) themes that simply don’t look nice with the Arabic content (although usually they’re very beautifull themes)

The ideal solution I want? Is to convince all of the web designers and developers of the world to include an RTL version of their themes! :D We have to wait for that a really long time..

So what can we do? communicate! We can share our ideas and skills to help enriching this poor space of the web. There are really beautifull themes out there and they will look even more beautifull if they fit well with our Arabic content.

I will start hopefully before the end of this year to share my own tips and tricks on how to deal with the RTL side of the web. I’m not a guru, and I’m not a pro, but I want to share what I know and learn what you know. I have thought of naming this learning experience “RTL This”. What do you think? I’d love to know your opinion..

My Lives…

The virtual and the real..

Yes I still insist on categorizing them as two completely different lives…and I’m going to keep it this way.

You see most of my “online/blog” friends are people I’ve never met..and I met the other few online/through the blog. My “real” friends are the people I know or met through these 23 years of my life. I chose the terms “real” and “virtual” simply because these are the terms used. But believe me…I have “virtual” friends who are to me..much more “real” friends.

Why I chose to separate both? Simply because I can’t handle merging them together..here’s why..

My blogging experience started in 20062005 with a lousy MSN live “space” that included nothing but photos and stupid diaries. I did because it integrated well with the MSN live messenger (what was I thinking :S). It was just a way to stay connected with my friends in Egypt when I left there…it was like my FaceBook page back then..

Then I met the first blogger (gr33ndata)..and throuh his blog, I got introduced to the wonderful world of blogging.. By time, I began to write a bit more seriously..I remember the first post I was ever proud of (and still) ; it was a really pissed off post about “Sexual Harrassement” where I wrote about the first time I was harrassed..the incident that NO ONE knew about ..

At this point, I knew that through the blog, I can talk about stuff I can’t talk about in the “real” world…I deleted the MSN space..and moved to blogspot; Simply because people wouldn’t understand…It might sound a stupid reason, trust me it’s not.

You see, I’m a person who’s known as the “girl-who’s-always-lauging” (or La Vache Qui Rie :P ), noone ever saw me crying (I make sure they don’t).  Where in my blog, I’m free, I can be sadangrydepressedhappygreatsillyin love…etc without worrying about silly comments or looks the other day. People here are honest (sometimes too much :D ) and genuine.

It’s true that I keep a line between both worlds..but at the same time I don’t hide them..most of you guys know my real name (it’s Layal :) ). I just don’t mention my blogging experience in “real” social gatherings. And most importantly, I don’t have my blog link in my FaceBook page, and I don’t have my FaceBook page link here…

The interesting thing is that I mentioned in a job interview that I own a blog(didn’t give the URL though)..and it somehow got me the job I have now ;)

I wrote this because I wanted to know if this is a common thing…or it’s just me..is your blog a part of your “real” life?

Help :D

Okay I want to to move..
I need to get a nice “layalk.net” domain name..
The thing is I don’t know if I’ll stay with Blogger or move to the very-famous-recently WordPress..
Any suggestions?? I’ve heard Drupal and Joomla are pretty nice too..
So I’m kind of lost here..
And what about the Design??
Should I build my own template from scratch?
Or get a ready template and modify it a bit or what??
Is it a good idea aslan to think of doing this?! :D
How much will it cost too??
Thanks alot.. :)
